Rooted: A Story of Rematriation
Film Screening and Community Conversation

Santa Fe Conservation Trust and Trees, Water & People invite the community to an evening centered on Rooted: A Story of Re-matriation, a short documentary about Indigenous access to ancestral homelands and cultural harvesting, shared stewardship, restoration, and relationships to land through the Traditional Harvest Project in southwest Colorado.

The film shares the story of a collaboration involving the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, private landowners, Trees, Water & People, Montezuma Land Conservancy, and other conservation partners. Together, they are expanding access to culturally significant plants and ancestral landscapes while exploring restoration, shared stewardship, and emerging tools such as cultural access easements.

The film opens a conversation that will be carried forward and explored by a panel.

The story offers one example of how Indigenous land access, restoration, shared stewardship, and land trust conservation tools can come together through relationship. Building from that example, the panel will bring together different experiences and perspectives to consider the larger questions it raises for cultural continuity, relationships to land, private lands and conservation easements, and the evolving role of conservation here in northern New Mexico.

The evening asks what becomes possible when conservation begins with relationship, trust, cultural knowledge and community priorities and how land conservation might continue to evolve in response.

The panel will feature Roxanne Swentzell, Wyatt Wilson, and Ariel Patashnik, with James Calabaza facilitating the conversation.
