In conjunction with the Second Annual New Mexico Rail History Celebration, visit the Chili Line in La Tierra Trails, nearly a half-mile of abandoned railbed in city-owned La Tierra Trails along the driveway to the Buckman Motocross Track.
Examine this opportunity for a “rail-to-trail” demonstrating and interpreting the Chili Line’s role in Santa Fe’s history, then join hikers or mountain bikers starting at about 5 pm on a retracement of a few more pieces of this old narrow-gauge railroad, which ran up the Rio Grande and beyond to Antonito, Colorado, from 1887-1941.
Then, if you’d like to ride a bike back into town, I’ll happily retrace the Chili line with you all the way back to the Railyard in downtown Santa Fe. So consider riding out to the trails, get a ride out, or carpool with someone so you can head back into town on your bike.
We will be organizing some transportation from the Railyard following the Historic Rails and Trails Discussion Panel to take place at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe, 555 Camino de la Familia, from 1-3 pm.
