Celebrate Bike Month with the self-guided “South Side Arroyo and River Cruise”!

The South-Side River Trail, between Constellation Dr. and Agua Fria St.
Originally planned to be held Saturday, Mar. 9, this community cruise has become one of several “virtually-together” rides being offered as part of “Bike Week” gone viral, as posted at santafebikeweek.com.
Enjoy on your own schedule, any time from May 9 through the end of the month, this seven-mile South-Side journey along the River Trail, the Arroyo Chamiso Trail in Tierra Contenta, and mellow roads, bike lanes, and a few short and easy dirt stretches in between. As shown at “Ridespot,” the route can be accessed from any location along the way, including spots with ample parking at the Camino Real Trailhead at the end of Constellation Dr., the SWAN Park near the end of Jaguar Dr., or the South Side Library at 6599 Jaguar Drive. If you are arriving by bicycle, a great entry point is at the River Trail crossing at the west end of Agua Fria St. near San Felipe Rd.

Future Acequia Trail: The west leg of the roundabout at Rufina St. and S. Meadows Ave.
Explore many more miles of paved trail by heading north from the River Trail on the Camino Real Trail, under the Relief Route to the Municipal Recreation Center and beyond.
The truly intrepid can extend the cruise east to incorporate part of South Meadows Ave. from Rufina St. to Ortiz Middle School via future city trail alignments that are still informal dirt tracks at this point. These include the Acequia Trail, which is the “fourth leg” of the S. Meadows roundabout at Rufina St., and the extension of the Arroyo Chamiso Trail east to S. Meadows between Sweeney Elementary School and Ortiz Middle School. Within a few years, the City will improve these informal and somewhat isolated dirt tracks into multi-use trails that will better tie the South Side into the rest of the City’s bicycle transportation network.
If you’re looking for something on other side of town, it’s never too late to do the Self-Guided Acequia and River Cruise between the downtown Railyard Park and Siler Rd., which we offered up in April for the celebration of Earth Day.
