On April 4, 33 cyclists joined SFCT Trails Program Manager Tim Rogers at the Plaza to take two loops retracing historic Route 66 (1926-37 alignment) as well as portions of Adventure Cycling Association’s Bike Route 66.
The first loop headed south and east – toward Chicago, but only up to Museum Hill and back – using “Bike Route 66” on Don Gaspar and Coronado to head out, and Old Santa Fe Trail to return to the Plaza just as historic Route 66 did. The second loop headed toward Los Angeles, including choice portions of the original Route 66 alignment on Cerrillos Rd., before returning on the Rail Trail, Alta Vista St., and Galisteo St., which comprise inbound Bike Route 66 from the southwest. This leg included a visit to Hadji Corona’s Racing Apparel shop in the Design Center, which served as an automobile showroom back in the days of Route 66, where we were treated to cold beverages and some nutritional supplements for the rest of the ride.
