E-News – Two Great Programs to Keep You Company

I am hoping that this email will bring a little joy into your lives as we shelter in place for a while to try to get the coronavirus under control.  How about some Banff films to add a little excitement to your couchsurfing?  Get ready because the Banff Virtual World Tour is coming soon, and the best way for you to see it is by using the SFCT affiliate link so that we can get a little percentage of the ticket price to support our trails and conservation work.  Banff says it may be ready by Thanksgiving, so keep your eyes peeled.  Nothing like some adrenaline fueled films to offset the tryptophan from the turkey many of you will be eating!  More details are below.

We are also so grateful to Laura Paskus and Bill deBuys, who are going to sit down for a chat about climate change in the southwest on December 9 at 6:30 PM.  When you are stuck at home, there’s nothing like a fireside chat with these two fabulous authors who will talk about their books and answer your questions about the climate on a chilly night.  Mark your calendar now so you won’t forget to tune in.  We’ll be sending out a link closer to the date.

ESTATE PLANNING

AARP says that 6 in 10 Americans don’t have a will or an estate plan, yet the coronavirus is also making people realize that anything can happen at any time.  If you are working to fill this gap in your life, consider this:  Does your connection to the land sustain, enrich and inspire you?  Are you concerned about access to nature for your children and grandchildren?  Including SFCT in your will is easy to do and will ensure that the land, trails and skies of northern New Mexico will be protected for future generations.  More info is in this planned giving guide.

New Charitable Giving Tax Deduction

One very positive outgrowth of the current situation is that the long quest for a “universal” charitable contribution deduction has finally been fulfilled.  Historically, a charitable contribution tax deduction has been available only to taxpayers who were willing to itemize their taxes. The CARES Act, however, changes that. Moving forward, even those of you who opt for the standard deduction in lieu of itemizing will be able to claim a charitable contribution deduction, up to $300.
